Why on earth do people put a gurk in their christmas tree ? Well as the story goes :

Before 1900 when christmastrees were filled with eatable presents like nuts (sometimes painted in gold), oranges, apples, cookies…….

the childeren of the family were allowed to pillage the christmas tree on christmas day.

The child (often helped by any elder or grandparent) that found the “gurk” was allowed an extra treat from the tree.

Wether this is a true story or a commercial invention is lost in history, I for one thing like the story.

No Christmas tree without a candy cane !!! I really can not imagine a christmas tree without the candy cane.

For most of us it is only candy for others there are extra meanings such as :

the cane represents the staff which Jesus used as an attribute

the red and white represent the red of his blood against the white of his skin at the cross

Don’t you love gingerbread cookies. I really do and especially the smell when someone is backing them at home. Although my mom never backed cookies for us I always feel like a child again when I get overwhelmed by this smell. Maybe that is why I love backing so much, for me it is a weekly habit. these cookies look much nicer then the ones I make but I am getting there !!!! A christmas tree full of gingerbread cookies glass ornament mixed with real cookies, what a treat.
